Questions for assessment

1.     Choose 2 machines that you used in the fabrication of your desk tidy. With these machines in mind, outline WPH&S considerations that must be adhered to when using these machines. Include photographs of your chosen machines (OnGuard may be an excellent resource for this question).
BAND SAW

Considerations that should be taken place:
·       Only one person using the machine at one time
·       Any hair should be tied back or in a hair cap
·       All items of clothing are tied back
·       Safety glasses must be worn
·       Make sure blade is in properly

DISC AND BELT SANDER

Considerations that should be taken place:
·       Safety glasses must be worn
·       Make sure sanding disc and belt is in good condition
·       Make sure you know what direction the belt and disc in going
·       Keep any cords, objects and tools away from sander

2.     The material you are using for your desk tidy is called Polymethylmethacrylate (ACRYLIC). It has specific properties and uses.  Choose 2 other common polymers and in table form give their industrial name, common name, properties and uses.

Name
Common Name
Properties
Uses
Poly vinyl chloride
PVC
strong rigid solid
pipes, siding, flooring
Polystyrene
Polystyrene
Can be transparent, white or any colours. Very light, hard and brittle
A large portion of polystyrene goes into packaging. The thin, rigid, transparent containers in which fresh foods, such as salads, are packaged are made from polystyrene. Polystyrene is readily foamed or formed into beads. These foams and beads are excellent thermal insulators and are used to produce home insulation and containers for hot foods. Styrofoam is a trade name for foamed polystyrene. When rubber is dissolved in styrene before it is polymerized, the polystyrene produced is much more impact resistant. This type of polystyrene is used extensively in home appliances, such as the interior of refrigerators and air conditioner housing.

3.     Extrusion, injection moulding, compression moulding, vacuum forming and laminating are examples of common manufacturing processes used with polymers (Plastics). Choose one process and with the use of diagrams and bullet points outline the process.

·       In compression molding the lower part of a two-part mold is filled with plastic granules (a).
·       The top part is lowered to apply heat and pressure (b).
·       The molded piece is then removed (c).
