Class Notes- 30/07/13

spur gear x2
pinion gear x2
axel housings x2
copper wire x2 do not use

Use graph paper to draw some different configurations.
(Take the 3D drawing from the paper into your head!)

Try plastic Corflute for chassis first.
This lesson spent designing car.

General info and information on how to make one car go faster than another:

  • All bits and pieces come in a packet.
  • All we have to construct our self is the chassis.
  • Motor, battery, battery holder, wires, chassis and gears.
  • The lighter the car the faster it will go.
  • Maybe use  a tongue depressor for chassis.
  • Take rubber of tires.
  • The more mass over the back wheels the less the wheels spin as it takes off.
  • Put batteries and most mass over back wheels.
  • Pinion gear- different assemblies and combinations.
  • Figure out which cog and gear configuration.
  • Blackboard --> Construction Suggestions --> put something like this in submission evaluating car!
  • Reduce tire- take rubber and hubcap off wheels.
  • Make sure car is more streamline
  • Centre of mass is closer to the rear wheels to increase the friction with the wheels and the track.
  • Try putting battery under car.
  • Lubricate and put petroleum jelly on wires when attaching car.
  • Make sure axis are completely parallel.
  • Use double-sided tape to attach axels.
  • Put WD40 in axel bearings to make it easier for it to turn.
  • Grease on gear and spur gear.
  • Balance wheels- put on wheels on sander until they are both even.
  • Chassis- corflut, tongue depressor, cardboard, mbf board, paddle pop stick.
  • Motor --> switch --> battery
  • A switch is an open and closing in a circuit.

Design and Technology Year 10 Pre-Engineering

This lesson Mr Ward introduced us to the Pre-Engineering assignment. In this assignment we have to make a small vehicle that can move down a small, straight track that is 8.4m long. We have to have the car going as fast as possible as it will be racing the rest of the classes cars. We are learning a lot about what makes these little cars go faster and taking into account many different aspects that could slow it down. We have to think and research about Friction, Velocity, Kinetic Energy and materials. The whole class gets the same materials and have the same tools to work with. I am excited for this unit and think I will really enjoy it as we are back in the workshop.
