Reflection 10/09/13

Today in design, Mr Ward is away so we are working on the historical aspect of our catapult/trebuchet assignment. This lesson I was working on the first question which is the history timeline of a trebuchet and I completed some of it. I had trouble finding which was the most relevant source to get this information from, but eventually I found one. It only went to some time in the AD's though, so next lesson I will have to find more information on that. I was also a bit confused on whether or not we had to do a normal horizontal timeline or whether or not we could do a vertical one. I will ask Mr Ward about it when he arrives back though. Tomorrow in Design I think I will start the second historical question of my assignment and will hopefully be able to complete that.

Reflection 05/09/13

This lesson we learnt about the different ways of joining the pieces of wood we are using to build our trebuchet together. The different joins you can use are:

  • Butt Joint
  • Rebate Joint
  • Reinforced Butt Joint (Wardy's Special)
This lesson will really benefit Alix and I whilst making our trebuchet as we now know which joins will make our trebuchet the most stable and strong. Mr Ward also informed us today that in next weeks lessons he will be away and that we will be working on the written component (history, planning and designing sections) of our essay.

Reflection 03/09/13

This past lesson in design futures Mr Ward had an information lesson on what our next task is. The task is to design a trebuchet or a catapult that can launch a golf ball the furtherest with certain dimensions. I an partners with Alix for this task and it is our last official task for df and will be my last ever at St Hilda's. I think this task will be a fun and enjoyable last task and hopefully Alix and I do really well. Mr Ward discussed the past lesson what the written component consists of and how he wants alot more detail then past ones as he will be marking fairly hard. He also discussed with us what trebuchets work the best and discussed how having a sling on it would make it go alot further but he has been unable to get one to work. The picture below is of the notes I took in last lesson:
